Thats right, we found some Buddha in HI - and not the silly fat laughing one, but the more serious kind at the Lahaina Jodo Mission.
After this, we stopped at Kaanapali to jump in the ocean for a little while, and then on to the Maui Brewing Co, which had some really good fish, and a few good brews, none great but pretty good. Excellent service though and reasonable prices.

So, after breakfast we switched plans from visiting various beaches all along the western shore, to driving to Hana and stopping at the Hana Lava Tube”. We always make a point of visiting caves whenever possible, and we would have been hard pressed to make it if we hadn’t gone today. The road is very windy, and while only about 40 miles from Kahului it takes about 2 hours, especially with the slow people in front of you.
Turns out the cave was the fallout shelter for east Maui - here’s G falling out:

Turns out that there was only room/provisions for about 15 people - I guess there wasn’t much in east Maui worth saving. It was a little pricey, but a good time. Not as much of an adventure as our trip to Ape Cave near Mt. St. Helens (which was before the inception of this blog), but still a good time. Here is G and I in the cave:

Yes, the proper way to wake up is jump in the ocean at 0630 when it is 24C out, and the water is warmer than the air. This is very refreshing and really wakes you up. Double wake up points if the waves are big and it takes some doing to keep from being knocked down.

After this, we enjoyed breakfast at the Kihei Cafe, which is damn good for little breakfast, very casual, cheap and tasty. Highly recommended, by me and AAA.

So for today we went on a snorkeling cruise with the Pacific Whale Foundation’s EcoTours Cruise to Molokini. This was quite a lot of fun. First, the crew was great, at least as good as the one on our Alaskan cruise this summer. They were absolutely great, helpful, knowledgeable and multi-talented. They made a pretty good veggie burger, and darn good Mai Tais considering the bottom shelf rum, oh well, they were free. I would definitely recommend this if you are in Maui. We liked it so much, we are now members.
Here’s G and I on the way to Molokini
And here is one corner of Molokini, which is a volcanic caldera that is mostly underwater. The coral and fish were really cool. We saw most of them in the aquarium, but it is much more interesting when you see them in the wild.

And here is G, universally OK.

So, we had a good time, though I found out I’m not very good at snorkeling. This was my second time, and I have a tough time getting used to breathing while my face is under water. After a few tries, and not dying, I was able to do it, sadly, my mask didn’t fit so well and I was constantly battling water in my nose and eyes.
Finally, we got off the boat in early afternoon. The slip provided us with some entertainment. Noah, these are for you.

We got up so early in the morning that we managed breakfast and almost 3 hours of beach sitting before noon. Even after I’ao State Park we still had plenty of time before dinner, so we drove around to Lahaina, which is a quaint little town, with a nice walking downtown area full of tourist trap type shops and small art galleries, much like Sedona, AZ. There is a really cool little used book store, and the below, giant banyan tree, which had a diameter of at least 25 meters.
After wandering around the town for a while, we headed back to our hotel to figure out dinner. Somehow, there was incredible traffic on highway 30, for no apparent reason. We were stuck, dead stop, for 10 - 15 minutes at a time, and when traffic finally started moving and we made it along, there was not obvious reason for the stop up. This is frustrating because there are not alternate routes. Below is G while we were stuck for an extended period.
After sitting in traffic for 45 - 60 minutes we made the 20 minute trip back to our hotel and searched for dinner. Most of the restaurants near by are resort/hotel restaurants, which are often good, but rather generic and expensive for the modest quality. We went in to Kehei and decided to drive up the main road looking for something good, with our fall back of Stella Blues, where we had breakfast, and it was quite good, with many veggie friendly options. This was a great idea, but half of Kehei was without power, again for no apparent reason.
In the end though, Stella Blues had power, and we had a good little dinner and headed home with the top down, listening to Soul Coughing’s ‘Sugar Free Jazz.’ We aren’t sure we want to fully switch to HI time, so we’ve been going to bed early and getting up early - tomorrow is a snorkeling adventure!

Today was a much nicer day in Maui. We had good weather, despite the meteorologist forecasts. After an excellent breakfast in Kehai we sat on Polo Beach for the morning. This has left me a little red in some places, and very red in others. G escaped with only a little searing in a few places.
After a quick rinse (the sand is very fine and gets everywhere), we decided to stop at I’ao Valley State Park which is home to the Ī‘ao Needle, which you can see below and in the Wikipedia article.
This was rather impressive, with steep cliffs and multiple flowing streams, and the knowledge that we were in what was once the caldera of a volcano and is now a rain forest. This was rather impressive.

Well, we did it. We’ll post some pictures of the wedding when we get home. It all did work out quite well though.
For now though, we are in Wailea, Maui, Hawaii. After a very long travel day on Sunday we arrived and did manage to find our hotel at the Diamond Resort & Spa. When we woke in the morning we were greeted by the common morning rains, which did not go away. So, we went to the Maui Ocean Center in the morning. Then attempted to procure t-shirts in my size. Banana Republic and Gap, my usual sources stopped carrying XS or the XS has grown to be too large. Thinking that stores in HI would be catering to a generally smaller Asian population we thought we had a chance. No luck.
OK, for now it’s time for a little rest before dinner.

Today is the big day. The sun is shining outside but it is 32 degrees so far with day’s high promised at 48. Average for this time of the year? 60 degrees. That’s why the pictures are scheduled to be taken outside. Am I bitter? Well, maybe just a little bit
But I do have to look at the bright side of things. I did not wake up with a cold or a huge zit this morning. Ben is still here, my friends have flown from all over the country just for us, and all preparations are on schedule. They say that one thing always goes wrong at the weddings. I will be pretty happy if that one thing is twelve extra degrees that have gone missing.
Time to go get myself married!
Yours,
the delinquent bride
PS. Would somebody please give me some extra geek points for blogging on my wedding day ?!?!?!?

We have been more or less silent for a few days. The primary reason is all the crazy activity surrounding the wedding. As you can imagine, there is a lot of stuff going on, and since neither of us have ever planned a real wedding, we (meaning me) are more or less completely confused.
Thankfully, G’s friend Amity has stepped up and figured out a lot of the missing pieces. She has been a life saver making sure our wedding isn’t a disaster and is coordinating so many of the details of the planning and actual ceremony activities, such as shooing guests around. So, she is a saint, a saint I tell you.
We’ll provide some updates in a few days when we’re on the beach in Maui!
