I Think the TSA Broke My Mac

February 10th, 2008

And I’m bitter. I have no proof, but it worked fine before I was ’selected by my airline for special security screening’ (a whole post to come soon) and didn’t work after. When dealing with the ’special’ screening, it takes a bit of effort to keep an eye on one’s bags, but traveling with two computers (one of which I am fond of) and being unreasonably attached to my Tumi luggage, I make a special effort to keep them in sight, and let me tell you - there was some rough loving for the Mac (and the Tumi luggage too, but Tumi is designed to, take it bitch).

When I got home and booted my Mac it looked like it was in photo negative color. There is a setting to do this, but the setting was correct, and connecting to an external monitor via DVI looked just fine. The only conclusion was that the display is fried. I took it to the Apple store in SF, and many of the Geniuses there commented that they had never seen anything like this before.

So, works fine, rough loving from TSA, not working anymore. There could be another explanation, but it would be great if they were a little more gentle with expensive computer equipment. Now I am stuck without my beloved Mac for 3 to 5 business days and a $300+ repair bill. The Mac may not be coming with me on trips anymore - I miss it, but too many opportunities for damage. At least until I get a MacBook Air, at which point not taking it seems a crime.

Finding out what music is really worth

October 6th, 2007

I was really impressed the amount of coverage around the blogosphere surrounding Radiohead’s recent decision to allow fans to decide how much to pay for their next album. First, great PR, considering the coverage, and second, a great experiment in what music is worth in the 21st century. Here’s an overview of the coverage I’ve been seeing.

And this is just a few from sources I’ve been following. For a while I was rather pissed at Radiohead for so specifically avoiding iTunes, which is the most convenient and quick way for me to get music (I’m happy to pay for music, if the prices are reasonable and I have some reasonable level flexibility in how I can use the tunes). And it is for this reason that I will be paying an iTunes like price for In Rainbows - somewhere between $9.99 and $14.99, or possibly $0.99 per song, just to make the point.

UPDATE: Also found good coverage at last100 and Mashable.

My Wife is Awesome

August 18th, 2007

As an anniversary gift G decided to acquire an iPhone for me. If you have been living under a rock, this is the coolest technology gadget to come out since the Apple II and possibly the Gutenberg press. It is awesome, amazing, just incredible, and seeing as I hate waiting (I’m not impatient), she agreed to purchase this little computing far before the actual anniversary date. Never has a gadget captivated the Net audience as this one, and never has a gadget actually lived up to such high expectations. I expect you will see a lot more random photos here taken with the iPhone, and probably a lot more random, short posts on things that are happening as they happen due to the iPhone’s constant and consistent connectivity.

I’m having fun.

The spin

July 26th, 2007

Here’s a blog post from the The Economist that is usually one of my favorite periodicals. However, in this particular case the argument is based more on the political spin than true free-market considerations. Feel free to browse through the comments and guess which one is mine.

Online Video

June 26th, 2007

I’ve mentioned Democracy TV here before, as well as Joost here. I’m not going to say one is better than the other - they are booth interesting and useful in their own way. Democracy TV is changing to Miro - it should be the same great stuff, just a new name.

More AppleTV

June 3rd, 2007

Many have pondered, AppleTV does not offer true 5.1 surround, which is really irritating, and about the only gripe I have with it. I’m a little unclear as to whether this is a software issues or an issues with iTunes music store, I haven’t ripped a DVD and uploaded to AppleTV yet. The hardware is certainly capable, and there is certainly software capable, but why not offer downloads of such quality through iTunes? Dear Apple - I love your products - two laptops, three iPods and one AppleTV, hundreds of songs and a few TV shows and movies so far, and I will buy more, believe me I will (sorry hon) - but why, oh why isn’t there HD content, and if not HD content 5.1 surround sound? How much larger can the files be?

More Google Gears

June 3rd, 2007

Google Gears is so good, the flight attendant just asked if I was online while I’m reading my Google Reader items. Yep, that’s pretty cool. Probably won’t be the last time.

Google Gears

June 1st, 2007

Google Gears is one of the coolest things I have found on the web in a long time. I am currently reading my RSS
feeds for the day while in flight. Usually when I travel items start piling up and I end up skimming through too many of them and missing things. With Google’s Gears you can download the unread items and enjoy them on the go. Sure, you can’t actually click through the links and read them, but it gives one a chance to filter down to the ones that are really interesting for follow up. You also can’t see images or videos, they don’t get downloaded, but that doesn’t seem too bad, anything that looks interesting can be left unread until reaching a connection.

When I get connected again, in theory, I can sync it back up and everything will be happy, my read items will be marked as such and I’ll see new items that have come up since I disconnected - let’s hope and see what happens.

Update: Yep, it works great, sync back up when online, not a problem. This is great, I hope Google adds this feature to Gmail, Google Calendars and Documents - doing so would truly make Google’s suite a viable option for small to medium sized business users.
