White people stereotypes

March 24th, 2008

A mildly amusing blog “Stuff White People Like” has recently filed San Francisco as one of those stereotypically white people’s things.
Let’s see– B and I fit quite a bit of the cliche. We recently moved here because it’s pretty, near the water, has great food and wine, and is in fact diverse. So far, so good. In fact, we’re such recent transplants that it’s easy for me to see the rest of the stereotypical San Francisco things from the outside and I am agreeing with most. Passionate hate and disgust towards LA? Check. Inferiority complex when compared to Manhattan? Big check. In fact, I would add another thing that seems funny to me when people from SF compare themselves to New York. While they do keep referring to their city as “a small town” or “the village” when putting it side-to-side with the Big Apple, they run for the hills and go complain to their representatives when somebody tries to build up and “manhattenize” the Bay area.
While I am not going to refute other, less funny, parts of the White People’s post, I want to add some of my own.
First of all: nice weather! Where else do you get to show off your Aldo loafers and Zara tweed jacket 12 months a year? Not close behind: pot that seems to be all but legal here. I sometimes can get a contact high by just walking to work on the street. One more: the protests! San Francisco (and Berkley for that matter) would not be the same without mostly white college students protesting something almost every day of the year, from trying to stop the carrying of the Olympic Torch through the city to Bike Plan Injunction, And finally: the Craigslist. The city loves it long time. They even post CEO positions on there.

Friday night madness

March 21st, 2008

I am up late on a Friday night and I am not even drunk. It’s going to be a long one for me, so here are some random things going through my head right now:

1. Neverland is abandoned and creepy. And oh yeah, it’s in foreclosure
2. This drink is not particularly good. Way too pink, not bubbly enough, tastes like vitamins and does not keep me awake very well.
3. I am really looking forward my Florida vacation in two weeks.
4. I received very very important little card in the mail recently– if you know me personally, you know exactly what I am talking about and you should now probably have a drink to celebrate :-) .
5. It’s not even midnight and I am really really sleepy. I am supposed to stay up till 4 AM– how is that going to happen?
6. Friday night late TV sucks– but you knew that already.

Lazy Sunday Afternoon

March 9th, 2008

The weather is gorgeous, sunny and way warmer than reported 63 degrees. I decide to take the fuzzy on a long walk. I also diligently bring along an oh-so-sexy hip bag that contains texas holdem casinopoquer gratiscaribbean poker pagina webcrack rebel pokerno deposit bonus pokereuropean pokercasino virtual portal webcasinos on lineruleta europea portal webtragaperra paginas webcasinos internacionales portal webruleta de la suerte jugarcasino internacional pagina internetinternet blackjackblack and jackjugar al instante paginas webcasinos espana paginas internetonline game, online games, online gamingruleta americana portales internetjuego ruleta descargar gratiscasino paginas webruleta de la fortuna gratisgran casinotragaperra portales webjuego gratis pagina internet, juego gratis, juego gratis webjuegos casino portales internetjugar seguro paginas webfree downloadsjugar paginas internetblackjack onlinecasino internacional portales webjuego paginas webonline gamesjugar gratis portales internetruleta europea portales webganar dinero verdadero lineajuego casino portal internetapuesta dinero internetapuesta internetall slotsregency casinocasino gratis ruletajugar apostar portalesapuestas libre en lineajugar interactivo internetganancias casinos onlinejugar slots en lineacasinos laneacraps javastreep poker dog treats so we can continue the education of the delinquent. Note to self: even a vague promise of a tasty treat makes my puppy behave like a decent canine. Who knew? She can even sit and stay while I walk away for about 6-7 steps (but runs off if I walk too far away or turn my back on her.) Gotta be happy with small progress. Next weekend is the “graduation” at Sonya’s “Puppy 2″ class which means she’s supposed to be an educated young lady who waits at every doorway and does not pick up any food off the sidewalk. Huh.

In real life, we’re going through doggie teenage years when she’s trying to rebel against the system by seeming to forget the most basic commands such as “sit.” Since I am now the system, I take none of this free spirit stuff. No treat or food gets dispensed without at least one trick demonstrated even if it takes 2 minutes of Sonya staring at me like I fell from another planet with my silly commands.

Following the nice long walk, a couple of hours of peace– the dog is spread out on the floor like a little rug. She has a rough life.

If voting were happening on Facebook

March 6th, 2008

I did some highly nonscientific Facebook look-ups by locating presidential candidates’ profiles and comparing the number of supporters listed:

Barack Obama: 670,000
Hillary Clinton: 129,000
John McCain: 83,000
(all numbers rounded to the nearest thousand)

What does that mean? Well, not much. It does indicate that among users of this particular website, more people associate themselves with Obama (or think it’s cool to support Obama so that girl in his math class will finally like him back.) Why do they think so? Maybe because Obama’s campaign machine did a better job marketing to this particular niche? Or because the kind of person who signs up for Facebook is more likely to support Obama? (much has been written on “typical Facebook user vs. typical MySpace user) Or Obama-friendly hackers mess with the numbers displayed?

Time will only tell. Internet has funny ways of being disconnected from reality. In addition to the three current presidential candidates, I also looked up Ron Paul who still has more Facebook supporters (84,000) than McCain. Radiohead has 44,000. Jessica Simpson has 4,000. Some people don’t know they can become fans of a politicians, some of them don’t care, some don’t vote.

But I am just a little tiny bit hopeful.

PS. And just for the record, I have my own preferences but I am not dead-set on either Democratic candidate– I am more of a big picture person :-).
