The delinquent bride: finally getting things done

July 31st, 2006

After several crazy weeks of partying, studying, and getting promoted (oh yeah! we don’t talk about work here though ;-) ), I am back to planning that little thing happening in October.

Doha round: why it got to be such a mess

July 31st, 2006

After reading this article, I decided to ask my dear friend Genya what she thought of the issue, since she has been directly involved with the trade talks last summer. This is what I got from her (directly from her email, Genya please don’t kill me if you didn’t want this public!)

Often forgot border disputes

July 30th, 2006

Foreign Policy has an interesting article about some of the land/border disputes that are often forgotten until they flare up. I think the one between China and India is particularly interesting. This is not an exhaustive list, but certainly interesting.

Indented paragraphs suck

July 29th, 2006

I absolutely hate APA style. I’m stuck in a class, which takes 10 weeks of pointless activities to drill home the (archaic) APA style - which is worthless in the Internet Age. But what I really hate is indented paragraphs, which are never, ever, used in business writing. I have written contracts, marketing pieces, white papers, proposals, RFPs, etc, etc and never once indented a paragraph. And I have never seen an indented paragraph in other people’s writing. So why, for the love of fuck would a business class place so much emphasis on indenting the f’ing paragraphs (in addition to all the other pointless obtrusive references when it is so much easier to link to them).

I think that in the not so distant future the guidelines for academic style will change significantly to emphasize linking to static, reliable sources within documents - they are faster and easier to verifiy, and, c’mon - who cites a book?

Getting bunked

July 29th, 2006

Getting caught up in some subtle viral marketing is nothing compared to what we don’t know about how tax dollars are spent. At Marginal Revolution, one of my favorite blogs we have an article about the telephone subsidies in rural areas. Short version: satellite phone: $800/line/yr, government subsidy: $13,000 line/yr.

Ouch.

Time to debunk myself

July 29th, 2006

Ok guys, after just a little digging– the “ex-wife Emily” is fake. Here’s a link but since NYTimes pages stop being free in a few weeks, here a short explanation.

It’s a viral marketing campaign for Court TV. They have a drama with a similar plot. Billboards like this one are not only in New York, but also LA, and Chicago. Grrr. Creative marking is good but people hate getting tricked.

Don’t mess with the wife!

July 24th, 2006

To continue with the complete lack of any theme on this blog, I present you a random act of vengeance:

This is a billboard that is up in New York right now (for a few more days at least) near Battery Tunnel. And here’s a link to the blog of this revengeful woman.

On the menu: debautchery

July 23rd, 2006

There was a lot of cooking in our household this weekend. I spent an hour Thursday night making gnocci and then another 3 hours with Genya on Friday night when we were feeding a small but hungry group of friends.

It all started like this…
beer.JPG
Ben and Genya are managing a beer revolution coming out of ever-so-darling 1.2 mini-keg that came to us all the way from my hometown (via Surdycks)

You can’t let good beer go bad! Genya drinking out of pie pan that will later host her famous apple-cranberry pie

A fabulous feast was next on the agenda and there was not a single item on the table that was not made from scratch (well, Ok we did have a baguette from the bakery but that’s a minor detail)

And this is how the evening progressed…

Genya and Jamie are sitting in front of the alcohol the six of us were enjoying. That included an entire bottle of Russki Standart, AKA the best vodka in the world.

Can you see my throat? Kostja and I are kicking it old-school :-)

And so it went until people started falling asleep on our new red couch.

Know your audience

July 21st, 2006

I saw a quick story on the news about panhandling in Dinkytown, and it makes me think, who goes around panhandling targeting people who have even less money than the homeless guys? I mean sure, college students are naive and compassionate (sometimes) - but come on - they’re college students - there are very few segments more broke.
