Worst commercial ever

May 31st, 2006

The Consumerist finally put in to words my disgust with the new Burger King commercial. Just gross - and I’m a guy!

Update from the battlefields

May 29th, 2006

This weekend was spent doing what any good Russian Mother wants to do while in the United States of Consumerism– shopping. We went to Target and Marshall Fields, PetCo and Barnes & Noble, but above all…. THE OUTLET MALL!

We did it right. We left home early in the morning. We arrived 5 minutes before the gargantuan complex opened their doors. We packed light and stayed hydrated. We entered about half of the 130 stores and made purchases in seven or eight. My feet hurt. I wanted to sit down and hide. But we didn’t give up. We tried to avoid places that seemed to be a little too popular with the common shopper– Old Navy, as expected, and Polo Ralph Loren which I cannot comprehend (the designer team took some real good acid back in the 80s and it still cannot wash off their purple-and-pink polos, amazing!) To expend my tree-hugger reputation, I came prepared with a big canvas bag. While checkout clerks at grocery stores have usually seen a greenie once or twice, the good people of Albertville seemed to be completely stunned by my bahavior. Oh well. I didn’t completely escaped the shopping fever but at least there are 8 less shopping bags to throw away.

Mom keeps asking why I never go shopping without her. Why would I? I know that twice a year I am faced with this cruel all-day exercise, so I might as well spare the pain and do all the shopping in one big but brief swoop. I am ready to be done with it till the next time.

PS. To follow on the Armani body– Banana Republic stopped carrying shirts in XS (available online only now.) It’s tough to be slim in the land of ever-expanding stomachs.

The delinquent bride: I am doing what?!?

May 25th, 2006

Slightly drunk on my own delinquency, I decided to commit bridal sin #1: I want to buy a used wedding dress.

I want to do… what? Have I no respect for tradition? What about all that bad Voo-Doo, what if the person who wore it before got a divorce?

My decision doesn’t have to do much with tradition. It’s the internal economist and the treehugger in me. The economist doesn’t understand why I want to spend a thousand dollars on a gown I will use once, the treehugger thinks of all those carbon emissions and better use for natural resources spent on a dress. And did I mention that I am cheap?

We’ll see how this decision works out for me– the problem with used dresses is limited selection (unless I do go through Ebay). I am stopping by at two wedding consignment stores tomorrow (Brides of France and Second Debut). Please let me know if you know of any more!

Yours truly,

Happy Birthday Bob

May 24th, 2006

Today is Bob Dylan’s birthday, so happy 65th Bob - and many more. Mr. Dylan is the poet of the 20th century, in my mind. For more Bob fun, facts and trivia check out Expecting Rain.

You Poke It, You Own It

May 24th, 2006

So I’m on the road, which means that I’m watching more TV than usual. There is a commercial for some crappy American beer (Miller Lite I think, don’t care), with the tag line “You poke it, you own it” - seriously. They are talking about putting a finger in the beer bottle to carry it……but you know where that one can go.

Now, I don’t have a marketing degree (yet), but this is bad planning. There are just too many ways to take this - or was that the point? Is it stupid or viral marketing?

The delinquent bride: in Minnesota, the wedding owns you!

May 24th, 2006

Now when my graduation has come and gone (and BTW, did you hear about this St Thomas oops that happened the same day?), I can freak out about my wedding on a full-time basis.

Ok, where to start? 5 months to go and we don’t have a location– can’t be good! Since all the cool places have been snatched up about 14 years ago by overzealous mothers concerned about their lil’ girls big day, I am left with slim pickings, unless of course I want to get married on a Wednesday.

Not discouraged by this realization, I’ve sent off emails to about six places (yay technology! No more wasting phone time!). While some facilities were not available and others had mean sales directors, other three remained in the running to become the backdrop of our big party. Logical next step being to visit them, I asked if we could stop by and see the premises.

Silly me! Even though I am considering giving these people hundrdeds if not thousands of our dollars, visit hours happen to be strictly during the day time and some places are booked till next month! Who would’ve known that even touring slots get booked up weeks in advance? Not willing to sacrifice my job to this affair, I managed to squeeze in two visits this Friday that I have off anyway to spend time with my mom. Ben, being a huge sweetie, is also working the two tours into his schedule.

I will post the reports from the battlefield this weekend.

Where the hell is BK?

May 23rd, 2006

Well, this week I am enjoying the greater Houston, TX area. I have to say, I wouldn’t want the main Houston airport named after me (George Bush Intercontinental - IAH). It’s ugly and disorganized. So far nothing too exciting about Houston to report - it is hot and humid, and there is a lot of traffic (Houston is one of the largest cities in the US).

I am here with a co-worker, who I am training to take over (one of) my previous roles. It is a little easier to travel with someone fun. Had dinner at Bennihana, and actually moved tables (grills?) to get away from a family with a large proportion of children. It was quite good, especially after a long day of travelling.
